Platform beds are becoming more popular all the time. Due to their good looks, flexibility, storage space and value, more and more people are choosing them. They can fit into anyone's decor and budget. Many types and styles are available, including wood, metal and upholstered platform beds.

The original platform bed was the futon. A simple cotton mat lying upon a reed base, the Japanese people have been sleeping on it for centuries. From there, it was a small step to make a thicker mattress and put it on a higher platform. Since then, platform beds have evolved into many types, styles and sizes. Today there are even platform beds designed to look like regular beds with posts and canopies.      

The primary building material for these beds is either wood or metal. A wood frame can be made of inexpensive soft woods like pine, reinforced with metal. The can also be made of more expensive hard woods like mahogany or cherry wood, which not only are stronger and longer lasting, but which have a rich, modern style. Once you make this decision, your next step is to pick a size, keeping in mind that the mattress has to fit the bed. Platform beds come in a variety of sizes all the way from kids' beds built on top of a storage system on up to California King size.

If you are looking for something more elegant, you can choose an upholstered platform bed complete with headboard. Upholstery can soften the modern, sometimes stark, look of a wood platform, giving it a more traditional feel. The variety of fabrics, patterns and colors you can pick is almost endless. Find something that matches and enhances your current bedroom decor. In addition, there is always the option of leather. Leather upholstered headboards come in either the classic tufted look or silky smooth. Nothing gives that rich look and feel like leather.
Whichever you choose, matching fabric or leather can also be applied to the sides of the bed and the front of the drawers of the storage system or night stands.          

If you prefer fabric, you can choose between solid colors or prints. In terms of fabric, microfiber is a good choice because it's durable, it comes in a large variety of color and patterns, and it's relatively inexpensive. Another durable choice is vinyl. Good quality vinyl can have the look and feel of leather at a fraction of the price. It also offers more color and pattern choices, and it's easy to keep clean.
Upholstered platform beds, come in all price ranges and styles, with and without extra storage facilities. While metal and wood beds tend to be more modern looking, upholstered platform beds have that classic, big bed look. They can be opulent. It's enough to make you want to spend the whole day in bed. 

Add coordinated nightstands and a dresser or two and you have a complete bedroom set.
